This is the Foundation of Successful Marketing Strategies

Flashy visuals? Giveaways? Constant social media updates, all day and every day?

If you’re wondering what the secret to a successful digital marketing strategy is, you’ll probably be happy to hear you won’t need anything too ostentatious. In fact, what you need is based on an incredibly simple concept, one that has been used by humans for millennia.

So what is it?

Storytelling.

Storytelling is swiftly becoming the premier marketing tool for businesses. You will not find a successful content marketing strategy without it, and in the internet-ruled world, the ways we craft and share stories are changing rapidly.

At the local and global levels, technology has forever changed and improved the ways we share our personal and professional stories. When a brand publishes an article, image, or video online, a person (a consumer or prospective customer) who lives thousands of miles away can take part in the experience with a simple click of the mouse.

Just as we communicate with our friends and colleagues using stories, we should also insert stories into our brand identities, marketing channels, and created content. If storytelling isn’t currently the foundation of your business strategy, you may have some work to do.

With the content you create and distribute, one of your goals is to foster a clear and meaningful human connection between your brand and your audience. It is only with thoughtful and strategically developed content that you can accomplish this. And when you tell a story, you can also appeal to a customer's personal narrative, compelling them to be a part of your story, too. Seth Godin, world-renowned entrepreneur and marketer, remarks, “Marketing is no longer about the stuff that you make, but about the stories you tell.”

Researcher Jeremy Hsu found in 2008 that the human brain is more engaged by storytelling that by simple logical facts. Facts and statistics can certainly be used in the content that is part of your marketing strategy, however, the impact of a well-crafted story is undeniable. This is especially true at a time when attention is hard to attract and retain. When your brand story gets attention through good narrative, your brand gets remembered in powerful ways.
